Hey there, I have some news.
This past weekend was Rotary's Weekend in the Mountains weekend in Revelstoke, BC. Basically all of the Inbound Exchange students (here from other countries), Outbound Exchange Students (will be going to other countries), and Rebound Exchange Students (have gone and come back from other countries) all come together and spend the weekend in a hotel, bonding, learning more about their countries, etc. I suppose in the grand scheme of it all, I had fun. I made some good friends, formed stronger bonds with some people that I already knew, and learned more about Rotary and the Exchange.
Unfortunately, some of the things I learned weren't all necessarily good. At breakfast on the Saturday I was approached by the Outbound Coordinator for students going to Croatia. This year is the first year that they've offered Croatia as an available country for our district and I'm the only student going there. Apparently, there have been some kinks. He told me that they haven't been able to get into contact with the Rotary District in Croatia. He's sent some emails, but has received no reply. He told me when they met in Lisbon, Australia and started talking about the exchange, the Croatians seemed really enthusiastic and excited, but now they just haven't received any word.
If all goes well and he does get a reply from them, I'll still be going to Croatia, nothing will have changed (this is apparently a possibility as not all countries doing the exchange are as organised as we are in Canada). If they don't receive word, though, I'll be assigned a different country to go to and that will be that.
There are worse things, I suppose. It isn't like I won't go, it just might not be where I thought I was going. I guess I got so used to the idea of going to Croatia, and so excited about the culture and the language that it's hard to imagine going somewhere else now. I can't help but feel that I won't have as much fun somewhere else, which isn't true. I guess I'm just having a hard time with it.
Anyways, I thought I should put it up here in case I do end up going somewhere else. I hope that isn't the case but I'd better get used to the fact that it might be.
I'll keep you posted.
